Settling In: Helping Your Little One Feel at Home at Wonderland Nursery

Starting at a new nursery or with a new childminder is a big step — for little ones and for parents! It’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves (trust me, every parent feels the same).

At Wonderland Nursery, my aim is to make that transition as smooth and happy as possible — so your child feels secure, loved, and ready to play and explore. Here are some simple, gentle settling-in tips that really do make a difference.

☁️ 1. Start Slowly (If You Can)

If you’re able to, we’ll begin with short visits before your child’s first full day. These little “hello sessions” give them time to explore the toys, get used to my home, and see a few friendly faces — all while knowing you’re nearby.

We’ll then build up the time gradually, at your child’s pace. There’s no rush — every child is different.

☁️ 2. Bring a Bit of Home with You

A familiar item — maybe a favourite teddy, blanket, or even a little photo — can work wonders in helping your child feel settled.

It’s like bringing a hug from home! That small comfort can help them feel safe while they get used to their new surroundings.

☁️ 3. Chat About What’s Coming Up

A few days before starting, talk about Wonderland in a positive, simple way:

“You’ll go and play with Alice, have some fun with the toys, and then I’ll come and get you after snack time.”

Keeping it upbeat helps your child know what to expect and builds their confidence before they even walk through the door.

☁️ 4. Keep Goodbyes Short and Sweet

This one can be tough (especially for parents!), but a quick, cheerful goodbye really does help.

Lingering can make your child think there’s something to worry about. A smile, a cuddle, and a confident “See you soon!” reassures them that everything’s okay — and that you’ll always come back.

☁️ 5. Stick to a Familiar Routine

Children love predictability. Keeping morning routines similar — same breakfast, same goodbye phrase — helps your child feel secure.

At Wonderland, we follow a calm, consistent routine too, so children know what’s happening next and can relax into their day.

☁️ 6. Stay in Touch

I know it can be nerve-wracking at first, so I’ll always keep you updated through our Tiney app with how your little one is getting on.

You’re never left wondering how their day went — and you’ll soon see just how happy and busy they are!

☁️ 7. Give It Time

Some children settle straight away; others take a little longer — and that’s absolutely fine.

The main thing is that we go at their pace. With patience, consistency, and lots of care, every child finds their feet.

☁️ Final Thoughts

Settling in isn’t just about getting used to a new place — it’s about building trust and relationships.

At Wonderland Nursery, my goal is for every child to feel safe, loved, and excited to come each day.
